U.S. Gains Carry 3PLs – 2011 3PL Market Analysis and 2012 Predictions is Released

STOUGHTON, WI, May 22, 2012 – Domestic North American transportation and value-added warehousing were the bright spots for third-party logistics providers (3PLs) in 2011 while grim European and cooling Asian results produced flat international markets.  Domestic transportation management net revenues increased 12.2% leading modest overall increases of 5.2% for gross revenue and 5.9% for net revenue.

Figure 1.  U.S. 3PL Market 1996-2012E (US$ Billions)

The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the U.S. 3PL market since 1996 came in at 10.3%.  For 2011, 3PL growth has been three times the growth in U.S. gross domestic product (GDP).

Domestic transportation management (DTM) led other segments in 2011.  Gross and net revenues both increased 12.2%.  Net income was 17.4% of net revenue.

Table 1.  Revenues and Profitability by 3PL Segment – 2011

*Total 2011 gross revenue (turnover) for the 3PL market in the U.S. is estimated at $133.8 billion.  $3 billion is included for the contract logistics software segment.  Totals may be off due to rounding.

Value-added warehousing and distribution (VAWD) had a solid year with increases of 8.2-8.4%.  Net income margins improved to 3% but VAWD continues to be a more mature segment which is less financially attractive than other segments.

Dedicated contract carriage (DCC) continued its resurgence in 2011.  Trucking companies including dedicated contract carriers continue to keep equipment supply tight preventing the negative effects of oversupplying the market with assets.

Overall global logistics costs and 3PL revenue estimates by major region and country are also detailed in the report.

STOUGHTON, WI, January 31, 2012 – In the second half of 2011, Armstrong & Associates collected information on contracting warehousing companies whose total revenues exceed $13 billion.  The average revenue for the sample companies was $823 million.  Revenues ranged from $36 million to $3 billion.  Companies reported organic increases from 1% to 25% for the first half of 2011 when compared to the first half of 2010.

In addition to a survey form, participants completed a series of spreadsheets providing detailed information on contract warehouses, contract customers and public warehouses.  Information covered over 600 contract warehouses, 300 contract customers and 100 public warehouses.

Commodities handled were split into 13 vertical industries.  The largest was Retail & Consumer Products at 18.4%.  High-tech/Computers accounted for 16.1% while Beverages & Food was 16.0%.  Building Materials came in at 1.7% reflecting the slowness of home construction activity in the United States.

Modern value-added warehousing and distribution (VAWD) third-party logistics providers (3PLs) all have significant transportation management capabilities.  The participants commonly have networktransportation management and dedicated contract carriage (DCC) trucking operations.  Three-fourths of our respondents have asset trucking operations including DCC.  All have networktransportation management capabilities with over half having control centers operating with major transportation management systems (TMS) platforms.  Participants use 74% of their total warehouse space for contract warehousing and 26% for public warehousing.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

U.S. and Global Third-Party Logistics Market Analysis is Released

STOUGHTON, WI, May 19, 2011 – Most third-party logistics providers (3PLs) got back on track in 2010 and are sprinting in 2011.  Consistent with ongoing economic globalization, the International Transportation Management 3PL segment led with a 30.1% gross revenue (turnover) and net revenue (gross margin) increases.  Dedicated Contract Carriage followed at 13.1%.  Overall, 3PL U.S. gross revenues jumped 18.9% in 2010 to $127.3 billion slightly exceeding the 2008 market result.

Figure 1.  U.S. 3PL Market 1996-2011E (US$ Billions)

The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for third-party logistics market net revenue from 1995 through 2010 was 12.7%.  2009 was the only negative year since we began tracking results in 1995.  From 2009 to 2010, the increase in 3PL net revenue was 4.7 times the rate of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) growth.  One driving factor of 3PL growth was world trade volumes which increased 12.4% for 2010.¹

Revenues and profitability increased in all four 3PL segments in 2010.  Gross revenue increases ranged from 12.9% to 30.1% and were up 19.4% overall.  Net revenues (gross revenue minus purchased transportation) were up 13.2%.  Net revenues are a better indicator of true business improvement since fuel related costs have minimal impact.  Overall, net income increased 23.4% from 2009 levels.

Armstrong & Associates Launches 3PL Advisor a Third-Party Logistics Provider (3PL) Rating and Informational Website

Published by . Filed under Press Releases. Total of no comments in the discussion.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Armstrong & Associates Launches 3PL Advisor a Third-Party Logistics Provider (3PL) Rating and Informational Website

STOUGHTON, WI, March 10, 2011 – As a natural extension of its Third-Party Logistics market research work, Armstrong & Associates, Inc. (A&A) has launched 3PLAdvisor.com to provide 3PL customers with a platform for sharing customer relationship experiences about their third-party logistics providers (3PLs). In-turn, 3PLs can receive valuable feedback from customers at no cost. Customers can anonymously rate their current 3PLs and send request for information (RFI) forms to 3PLs they may be interested in working with.

According to A&A’s President Evan Armstrong, “We’ve developed a straightforward website where 3PL customers can easily provide feedback on their 3PL relationships and where 3PLs can see how well they are meeting customer needs. This type of no-cost information sharing forum is one of the greatest benefits from internet business social networking and customers’ shared experiences have considerable value as firms evaluate 3PL providers as part of their strategic outsourcing decisions. Unlike customer satisfaction surveys, 3PL Advisor takes an ongoing approach versus a one-time snapshot.” Armstrong added, “To ensure a high level of quality, A&A reviews each 3PL customer review and 3PL profile submission prior to it being displayed on 3PLAdvisor.com. While customers can anonymously post reviews of their 3PLs, we strictly prohibit 3PLs from evaluating other 3PLs and strive to ensure that the site contains the most accurate 3PL profile information possible.”

As customer reviews are submitted, 3PLAdvisor.com automatically generates over 100 top ranked 3PL lists including:

  • Top Rated Global 3PLs
  • Top Rated North America 3PLs
  • Top Rated China 3PLs
  • Top Rated Europe Ground/Road 3PLs
  • Top Rated Brazil Warehousing/Contract Logistics 3PLs

Armstrong & Associates’ Report on the State of Warehousing in North America is Released

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Armstrong & Associates’ Report on the State of Warehousing in North America is Released

STOUGHTON, WI, October 19, 2010 – Commercial warehousing revenue in the United States will reach $50 billion this year according to a new report by Armstrong & Associates, Inc. Contract and public warehousing combined are expected to exceed 2008 revenues by 2% after declining in 2009. The contract and public commercial warehousing market now constitutes 45% of the total U.S. market. Details of these segments by vertical industry are provided, as well as lists of the top dry and refrigerated warehousing providers. This year’s report has expanded coverage on the Canadian and Mexican warehousing markets and the refrigerated warehousing segment.

The report provides updates on facility sizes, capacity, revenues, pricing, regional variations and vertical industries. Operating margins, EBITDA and EBIT margin distributions are provided for contract warehousing operations. The results show that profitability is not inherent to either of the models, but is determined by company cultures and pricing practices. Expected operating margins and profitability measures are compared to actual results. Statistical analyses detail the effects of open book relationships and leasing, versus ownership on overall warehouse profitability. Practitioners provide insight on the role and benefits of gainsharing relationships.

The analysis also explores the trend in the growth of contract warehousing at the expense of public warehousing. Three-year contracts are standard covering 48% of the contract warehousing relationships. Comparisons for open book versus closed book and building ownership/leasing arrangements have been calculated. Specifics for KPIs, value-added services and gainsharing are presented.

The report also includes components of standard warehouse pricing models. The major variables are space utilization, labor, administrative costs and target profitability margins. This standard costing methodology is used for both contract and public warehousing pricing. Gainsharing, single-factor carton pricing and other key pricing elements are examined. Charges for package handling, storage and value-added services are detailed in the report.

Chainalytics and Armstrong & Associates Form a Strategic Partnership

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chainalytics and Armstrong & Associates Form a Strategic Partnership

Relationship to Make Model-Based Benchmarking Available to 3PLs

Atlanta – April 20, 2010 – Chainalytics LLC, a supply chain consulting firm focused on enabling fact-based supply chain decisions, and Armstrong & Associates, Inc., a supply chain market research and consulting firm specializing in 3PL market research, announced today a multi-year marketing and co-branding partnership to develop Model-Based Benchmarking (MBBC) services for third-party logistics providers (3PLs). 3PLs will now have access to a similar range of benchmarking capabilities that Chainalytics had previously offered primarily to shippers in Fortune 100 retail, CPG, and manufacturing industries. Armstrong & Associates will be Chainalytics’ sole 3PL strategic marketing partner.

The agreement encompasses a joint marketing and industry analysis methodology to target all domestic 3PLs with significant transportation spend in truckload and intermodal, including dry van, refrigerated, and flatbed equipment types. As part of the service, 3PLs will receive a wealth of transportation information, including 3PL specific surveys, benchmarking rate comparisons, peer fuel program and operational factor analyses, and online tools for batch rating.

3PLs will no longer have to guess at contracted rates for markets which they are unfamiliar. Using Chainalytics’ proven MBBC approach and methodologies, 3PL members will be able to perform engineering studies and respond to RFPs with a broader understanding of domestic freight markets and trends. Chainalytics and Armstrong & Associates will jointly develop industry surveys focused on specific 3PL issues with econometric benchmarking data to insure consortium membership confidentiality.

“Chainalytics is the market leader in transportation benchmarking with its MBBC member base reaching $15B in annual freight spend,” said Evan Armstrong, President of Armstrong & Associates. “A benchmarking service that expands 3PLs’ market knowledge of transportation rates has been needed for many years. We are excited about working together with Chainalytics to extend benchmarking capability to 3PLs”.

“Armstrong & Associates’ track record as the de-facto standard in 3PL industry analysis and consulting is a big reason why we made the decision to partner,” said Matthew Harding, Principal Chainalytics. “The depth of Armstrong & Associates relationships and the breadth of its customer base and analysis in the 3PL market provide a unique opportunity to expand transportation market intelligence.”

The first phase of this partnership will focus on domestic over-the-road purchased transportation, with subsequent phases extending to Less-Than-Truckload, Ocean Import/Export, and Heavy Air models.

U.S. and Global Third-Party Logistics Market Analysis is Released

Published by . Filed under Press Releases. Total of no comments in the discussion.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

U.S. and Global Third-Party Logistics Market Analysis is Released

STOUGHTON, WI, May 21, 2009 – After 11 modest months in 2008, third-party logistics revenues dove in December and have remained depressed in 2009. While a few third-party logistics providers (3PLs) could drown, most are treading water and some are swimming strongly.

Our recent survey and analysis shows gross revenue (turnover) for 3PLs down by 8.8% for 2009. Net revenues (gross margins) were less impacted for many non-asset transportation managers and leading value-added warehousing 3PLs.

Expeditors, C.H. Robinson, Kuehne + Nagel and other major transportation managers report net revenues decreased 3% to 10%. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDAs) and earnings before interest and tax (EBITs) fell proportionately. Additionally, net revenues are expected to be down another 5% this year for the transportation management group.

In a recent survey, for 3PLs as a group 60% are reporting lower gross and net revenues for this year. Among value-added warehousing 3PLs, 57% are reporting increased net revenues. Automotive and retail vertical industries were the main drags on 3PL market growth for 2009 with projected revenues down 32% and 23% respectively. The food and grocery vertical and 3PL returns management subsegment are up for the year. GENCO, Kenco and New Breed expect revenues to increase in 2009.

Table 1. Estimated Revenue and Net Income Reductions by 3PL Segment – 2009

2008 Results – U.S.

2008 could be remembered as “lackluster” or “it could have been worse.” Gross revenues for third-party logistics in the United States grew 6.7% in 2008. Net revenues grew 4.7% compared to 7.2% in 2007 as the logistics part of the economy continued to slow before it dove in December. Combined EBIT for 3PLs was 8.9% of net revenue. Net income increased only 1.5% and was 5.3% of net revenue. Overall growth and the net profit ratio of 94.7 was the weakest since we began tracking it for FY1996.

Figure 1. U.S. 3PL Market 1996 – 2010E (US$ Billions)

We estimate that 2009 will be the first recorded negative year in 3PL gross revenue growth since we started tracking it in 1996.

Warehousing in North America – 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Warehousing in North America – 2008

STOUGHTON, WI, May 30, 2008 – Commercial warehousing in the United States has reached $37.5 billion according to a new report by Armstrong & Associates, Inc. The number of commercial warehouses is estimated at 8,000 with 1.3 billion square feet of space. Market growth was 7.7% for 2007 and commercial warehousing now constitutes one-third of total U.S. warehousing.

The report contains detailed information of the contract and public segments of the commercial warehousing market. Lists of the top dry and refrigerated warehousing providers with overall storage capacities are provided. Operating margins, EBITDA and EBIT margin distributions are provided for contract warehousing operations. Three year contracts are standard covering 54% of the contract warehousing market. Comparisons for open book versus closed book and building ownership/leasing arrangements have been calculated. Specifics for KPIs, value-added services and gainsharing are presented. This year’s report has expanded coverage on the Canadian warehousing market.

In the report, components of standard warehouse pricing models are given. The major variables are space utilization, labor, administrative costs and target profitability margins. This standard costing methodology is used for both contract and public warehousing pricing. Gainsharing, single-factor carton pricing and other key pricing elements are explained. Public warehousing pallet handling charges were found to vary regionally from $5.75 to $6.79. Package handling, storage and value-added service charges are detailed in the report.

Expected operating margins and profitability measures are compared to actual results for the warehousing providers participating in the study. These relationships are reviewed in detail and in reference to the warehouse pricing “Negotiation Zone.” Statistical analyses detail the effects of open book relationships and leasing versus ownership on overall warehouse profitability.

The analysis explores the trend in the growth of contract warehousing at the expense of public warehousing. The results indicate, however, that profitability is not inherent in either of the models but owes more to company cultures and practices.

The complete study with appendices is available from Armstrong & Associates. It can be purchased by phone at +1-608-873-8929 or online at: www.3plogistics.com.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hanging Tough – 3PL Market and Financial Results Released

STOUGHTON, WI, April 29, 2008 – Despite an ongoing freight recession in 2007, U.S. third-party logistics service provider (3PL) revenues grew to $122 billion. Growth was 7.4% in gross revenue (turnover) and 7.2% in net revenue. World revenues grew to $487 billion driven by Asian results.

3PL revenue growth was highest in non-asset transportation management. Overall growth continued a pattern of being more than three times the growth in U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). 3PL growth continues to be driven by companies outsourcing to concentrate on core competences, the need for sophisticated supply chain information technology solutions, and globalization.

Armstrong & Associates, Inc. projects that U.S. 3PL revenues will exceed $150 billion in 2010 after a modest year (5.5% increase) in 2008 and an improving year (7.5% increase) in 2009.

Net revenue for International transportation management (ITM) including Expeditors Int’l, Kuehne + Nagel and DHL Global Forwarding grew by 9.5%.

Domestic transportation management (DTM) grew 8% with net income margins averaging 13.4%. DTM includes freight brokerage and related value-added services. C.H. Robinson dominates DTM with 34% of net revenues and 66% of EBIT.

Third-party logistics continued to consolidate in 2007. Strategic purchases and private equity investments continued across functionalities. Wall Street analysts became concerned about the inherently lower profit margins in VAWD. In addition, investors continued their preferences for non-asset based activities.

The complete report can be obtained online at: https://www.3plogistics.com/shopsite/index.html.

U.S. and Global – 3PL Financial Results – 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

U.S. and Global – 3PL Financial Results – 2006

STOUGHTON, WI, April 9, 2007 – Third-party logistics gross revenues for the U.S. broke $110 billion for the first time in 2006. 3PL gross revenues hit $113.6 billion, a 9.5% increase. Net revenues were $53.1 billion. EBIT and net income margins in relation to net revenue were 8.6% and 5.4% respectively. Margins for the year were down slightly due to the fourth quarter economic slowdown.

As part of its just released report, Armstrong & Associates estimates the global third-party logistics market at $391 billion. European 3PL revenues are estimated at $139 billion.

For the U.S. market, International Transportation Management (ITM), which includes major components of freight forwarding and global supply chain management, had net revenue increases of 17.7%. Kuehne + Nagel, Expeditors, DHL Global and APL all had net income margins of 10% or greater compared to net revenue. ITM growth is primarily a reflection of continued economic expansion in China and the Asia Pacific markets.

Domestic Transportation Management (DTM), including freight brokerage, posted a 12% gain in net revenues (gross margin). Gross revenues (turnover) were $33.8 billion. BAX, BNSF, C.H. Robinson, Meridian IQ and NFI grew by more than 20%. Hub, Penske, Ryder and Werner grew by 10% or more. After-tax Net margin for DTM was 11.1%

DTM net revenue growth slipped from 18% in 2005 and net income margin dropped by 1%. We attribute these changes to the U.S. economic slowdown; they are temporary downturns and have no significant long term importance for key players in DTM. Despite the slowdown, C.H. Robinson still ended the year with net revenues of $1.1 billion and a net income margin of 24.7%. BNSF Logistics, Hub, NFI and Werner all had double digit net income margins.

Table 1. Revenues and Profitability by 3PL Segment – 2006

1 Total turnover (gross revenue) for the 3PL industry in the U.S. is estimated at $113.6 billion; $3 billion is included for the contract logistics software segment.

Warehousing in North America – 2006

Published by . Filed under Press Releases. Total of no comments in the discussion.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Warehousing in North America – 2006

STOUGHTON, WI, May 22, 2006 – A major white paper on warehousing has just been released. The report, “Warehousing in North America – 2006,” benchmarks prices and practices. In addition it includes basic industry statistics and major player information.

The author reports that U.S. commercial warehousing revenues are $28.8 billion. “The industry grew 9.5% last year and we forecast another strong year for 2006,” said Richard Armstrong, author of the report.

The report benchmarks contract and public warehousing in separate sections. Contract warehouse relationships are measured by operating margins, EBITDA and EBIT margins. Regional differences are reported for both contract and public operations. Key performance indicators (KPIs) and value-added services frequencies are included.

Lengths of contracts reviewed in the study were from 1-7 years. The study found that most contracts have 3 and 5 year terms.

In the report, components of standard warehouse pricing models are given. The major variables are space utilization, labor, administrative costs and margins. This standard costing methodology is used for both contract and public warehousing. Gain-sharing, single-factor carton pricing and other key pricing elements are explained. Public warehousing pallet handling charges were found to vary regionally from $5.75 to $6.79. Package handling, storage and value-added service charges are detailed in the report.

Expected operating margins and profitability measures are compared to actual results for 3PLs in the study. These relationships are reviewed in detail and in reference to the “Negotiation Zone.” Statistical analyses were performed showing the effects on profitability of open book relationships and leasing versus ownership.

“We undertook this study originally because we had a Japanese consulting client who wanted to know what and how 3PLs and commercial warehouses were charging for their services in the U.S.,” said Armstrong. “There was not a good source available. Our report is the only public explanation of what the real prices are in warehousing in North America.”

The analysis emphasizes the growth of contract warehousing at the expense of public warehousing. The results indicate however, that profitability is not inherent in either of the models but owes more to company cultures and practices.

The complete study with appendices is available from Armstrong & Associates. It can be purchased by phone at +1-608-873-8929, or online at: https://www.3plogistics.com/shopsite/index.html.

Bigger and Better – 3PL Financial Results – 2004

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bigger and Better – 3PL Financial Results – 2004

STOUGHTON, WI March 23, 2005 – Third-party logistics service providers (3PLs) had a great year in 2004. Total revenues for the U.S. 3PL market rose to $89.4 billion, an increase of 16.3%. The compound annual growth rate for U.S. third-party logistics is 14.2% since 1996. Leading the way was international transportation management (ITM), the core component for global supply chain management. ITM increased 34% for U.S. 3PLs. This significant growth reflected a large increase in global product movements to the U.S., particularly from China. Tight vessel, airfreight and truck capacities allowed for significant price increases. Better net revenues and income margins followed suit.

Net revenues (gross margin) for U.S. market international transportation supply chain managers (ITM) increased 17.2% for 2004 to $7.8 billion. After- tax profit margins improved to 7.1%, three percentage points better than the previous year. These margins are similar to 1998. If current trends continue for another year, the ITM segment will return to its traditional after-tax net income margins of 9-10%. Leading the way in ITM are Expeditors International, UTi, DHL Danzas and Kuehne & Nagel. All of these companies have more than $1 billon in U.S. turnover. Their after-tax income margins range from over 17% (Expeditors) to 9% (Kuehne & Nagel).

Major growth and even better profitability occurred in U.S. domestic transportation management (DTM). Leading the DTM segment is C.H. Robinson, one of the most profitable companies in the U.S. Robinson’s net revenue increased to $661 million and its after-tax margin was 20.8%. Turnover for DTM increased to $25 billion, a 16.8% increase. After-tax net income margin improved to 11.6%. Other leaders in this segment include Landstar and Schneider Logistics.

$89.4 billion. $3 billion is included for the logistics software
segment.

Dedicated contract carriage (DCC) reached a new high of $8.7 billion in 2004. The previous best year for DCC was 2000. Revenues contracted for 2001 and 2002. Tight trucking capacity in the U.S. helped this segment. Cardinal Logistics, NFI, Penske and Werner had increases of over 20%. Schneider Dedicated and J.B. Hunt, the largest players, had double-digit growth.

Value-added warehousing and distribution (VAWD) increased by 7% in 2004. Since 1999 this segment more than doubled with a compound annual growth rate of 15.3%. VAWD continued to grow solidly during the economic malaise of 2001- 2002. The downside for VAWD is that its profit margins, though they improved in 2004, are still meager compared to transportation management. The net income after tax percentage improved from 2.7% last year, to 2.8%.

The complete report for 2004 can be obtained by contacting Armstrong & Associates. Armstrong & Associates’ Extended Information Service subscribers will receive the report next week.

U.S. Warehouse Market Size and Benchmark Pricing Report Released

STOUGHTON, WI, January 10, 2005 – A recently completed report on the United States warehousing market, complete with price and profit benchmarks, has been released. “An Overview of Warehousing in North America – Market Size, Major 3PLs, Benchmarking Prices and Practices”, estimates the U.S. commercial warehousing market at $25.7 billion. After-tax profitability was reported at 2.7%.

A major part of the report is dedicated to warehouse price and practices benchmarks. Contract and public warehousing are addressed in separate sections. Contract warehouse relationships are measured by operating margins, EBITDA and EBIT. Regional differences are reported for both contract and public operations.

Lengths of contracts reviewed in the study were from 1-7 years. The study found that most contracts have 3 and 5 year terms. Only 9% of contracts were for 1 year and 14% were for more than 5 years.

In the report, components of standard warehouse pricing models are given. The major variables are space utilization, labor, administrative costs and margins. This standard costing methodology is used for both contract and public warehousing. Gain-sharing, single-factor carton pricing and other key pricing elements are explained. Public warehousing pallet handling charges were found to vary regionally from $4.70 to $5.86.

“We undertook this study because we had a Japanese consulting client who wanted to know what and how 3PLs and commercial warehouses were charging for their services in the U.S.,” said Richard Armstrong, president of Armstrong & Associates, a supply chain management consultancy. “There was not a good source available and the only way to get the information was to put out an RFP. Our report is the only public explanation of what the real prices are in warehousing in North America.”

The analysis emphasizes the growth of contract warehousing at the expense of public warehousing. The results indicate however, that profitability is not inherent in either of the models but owes more to company cultures and practices.
